Thousands of people flocked to the Borrowdale Racecourse in Harare on Saturday for the country’s most anticipated horse racing event – the Castle Tankard.
While the event was meant to put the spotlight on some of the world’s best stallions, fashion, especially the Quail (Isigwaca/Chihuta) outfit seemed to be the biggest star of the show on a day when Rock the country – a horse ridden by South African jockey – Hernnie Greyling emerged winner of the Castle Tankard.
The bird which has become the talk of town after it recently emerged that its eggs and meat ‘‘can help manage various diseases’’ was an instant hit at the Tankard when it surfaced in the form of a clothing range by Harare-based designer – Tarisai Gweje
For the avant-garde bird collection which Gweje named – Above my shoulders- she used hose pipes, wires, and CDs to make the designs. She said the collection had been inspired by life Above my shoulders is an avant-garde collection where I was trying to inspire people to soldier on no matter how tough life is and look forward to a better tomorrow,” said Gweje.
Upon leaving the ramp, the ladies who had paraded in the quail bird outfits were swamped by the crowd who wanted to have a closer look and have pictures taken standing next to the bird.
Other young fashion designers also used the opportunity to showcase some of their work, hoping to catch the right eyes. These included Tunga T from Mafriq, Catherine Hwata and show choreographer – Wilbert Rukato.
Most fashionistas however decided to dazzle in African Print outfits with gothic patterns, ethnic colours and traditional patterns being the order of the day.
The windy weather did not stop attendees from partying up a storm in the private marquees as top executives were spotted having a ball in the Steward Room where they watched the action live on television with some going on the balcony for a closer view. The masses had their own fun as they had various activities lined up for them during the day including various races, with jumping castles well on standby for the young ones.
But the main attraction was the after party where artistes, DJ Stavo, Ex Q, Winky D and Jah Prayzah took turns to perform. Sadly, the party which started just after 6PM had to end at 10PM, leaving fans begging for more.
