#ThisFlag Pastor Evan Mawarire meets Mukanya in USA




#ThisFlag frontman Pastor Evan Mawarire who is in the USA has shared a photo of himself with the legendary Chimuranga musician Thomas Tafirenyika “Mukanya” Mapfumo.

Mapfumo fled the Mugabe regime a while ago and sought refuge in the States.

The photograph (above) was captioned: “Met Mukanya Thomas Mapfumo. Says our generation should be writing new songs for a new struggle #ThisFlag.”

1980: Sang with Bob Marley & the Wailers to celebrate the Independence of Zimbabwe (Africa).

1984: Shared the stage with Elton John in England

1999: University of Zimbabwe, Honorary Master’s degree in recognition of his advocacy for freedom.

2000: National Arts Award for Zimbabwe’s Person of the Century.



2000: Sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation on global tour (USA, Australia, Asia and Europe)

2001: Ohio University at Athens, Honorary Doctorate degree in music to recognize his activism.

2001: AFIM’s Best World Contemporary CD Award in March 2001 (“Chimurenga Explosion”).

2004: Award for first world music artist to go digital with a download-only release , “Rise Up”, later released in CD form by Peter Gabriel’s Real World label.”

2006: Featured in an interview with Phil Meadley of the Guardian in London, England.
