Boxer Charles Manyuchi flew to Harare on Monday from a victorious trip to Russia and his manager was quick to make a shock announcement.Chris Malunga said the 27 year old boxer would stage a fight in the country in honour of President Robert Mugabe.
Manyuchi would be defending his titles, the Herald reported.
Mugabe honoured Manyuchi last year after defending his WBC international bronze title.
Manyuchi won the World Boxing Council welterweight silver belt on Friday when he became the first boxer to beat Russia’s Dmitry Mikhaylenko, regarded by some as the next big thing in welterweight boxing.
Said Malunga “The next thing here is the defence’ he began.”
“The defence is a voluntary defence and I had promised the Head of State that we need to do a promotion here and we have to do it.
“I am appealing to you Honourable Minister (Makhosini Hlongwane) that we have to do a promotion for Charles Manyuchi.
“This is your own product, it’s your own flag.
“I think if we stay here for one month we can raise the money to put up a boxing promotion in honour of the Head of State. “We can do a boxing promotion here, we can raise US$150 000, it’s not always that it’s cash, some can come from hotels like this, the budget starts reducing, from the media.
“If we are promoting boxing in Malawi why can we not promote where our champion comes from? I feel the next defence must be here and the patron to raise that money if I can be given permission it’s you Honourable Minister (Hlongwane) because you have the heart”.
