Man sentenced to 3 years in jail for striking wife with hammer

A 44-YEAR-OLD man from Montgomery on the outskirts of Bulawayo has been slapped with an effective three-year jail term for hitting his wife with a hammer on the head.

Ntandoyenkosi Moyo appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Mark Dzira charged with attempted murder.

He pleaded not guilty but was convicted due to overwhelming evidence.

Moyo who was initially sentenced to four years in jail had one year of his jail package suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.

While sentencing Moyo, the magistrate took into consideration the fact that when he committed the heinous crime it was premeditated as Moyo had initially threatened to kill his wife Tafireyi Tshuma.

The court heard that on 11 November 2022 and at around midnight, Moyo came home drunk and started shouting at his wife.

It is reported that he went on to assault her with booted feet before taking a hammer to hit her on the head.

As a result of the brutal attack, Tshuma, who sustained a swollen face, multiple cuts on her hands and a deep cut on the forehead, was referred to hospital for treatment.

The matter was reported at ZRP Queenspark, leading to the arrest of Moyo.
